Position description

Executive Director of the California Poison Control System, UCSF Faculty position

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Clinical Pharmacy in the School of Pharmacy is seeking a full-time faculty member to serve as the Executive Director of the California Poison Control System at the Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank in the Health Sciences or Professor of Clinical Pharmacy faculty series, depending on the candidate's expertise and experience.

The Executive Director of the California Poison Control System (CPCS) provides strategic direction, executive level leadership, planning, organization and general management for all aspects of the CPCS. The Executive Director will establish a future state vision that aligns with the UCSF Department of Clinical Pharmacy priorities in providing excellent quality services and sound business approaches. The Executive Director is responsible for achieving system goals and objectives through the coordinated achievements of the CPCS. The Executive Director manages the accountability and stewardship of human (e.g., employee engagement), financial, and physical resources in coordination with the UCSF School of Pharmacy. The Executive Director sustains overall responsibility for the CPCS budget and funding, in concert with the CPCS Director of Business Operations and Chair of the Department of Clinical Pharmacy. The Executive Director serves as the Principle Investigator/Project Director for all CPCS Contracts and Grants following UCSF policies. The Executive Director chairs the CPCS Leadership Team and supervises Managing Directors, Central Office staff and IT staff and collaborates closely with the Medical Directors. The successful applicant will engage teaching in the UCSF School of Pharmacy and be encouraged to engage in research to the level appropriate for the faculty series. The Executive Director shall serve as an Associate Dean in the UCSF School of Pharmacy.

Required Qualifications:


  • PharmD or other relevant, terminal degree
  • Experience in the field of poison control
  • Expertise in negotiating and obtaining service contracts and grants
  • Expertise in budget and finance management
  • Expertise in leading multidisciplinary teams
  • Demonstrated ability to drive change through influence and advocacy


  • Evidence of strong oral and written communication skills


    Preferred Qualifications:


    • Expertise in leading multidisciplinary teams across a system over a large geographical area
    • Expertise in managing represented employees and complying with bargaining agreements
    • Expertise in supporting research initiatives
    • Successful track record of publications and external grant funding

      The posted UC salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See Table 5. The minimum base salary range for this position is $112,500 - 297,200. This position includes membership in the health sciences compensation plan which provides for eligibility for additional compensation.

      California Poison Control System

      The California Poison Control System (CPCS) was founded in 1997 to centralize poisoning advice and prevention services in California. The mission of CPCS is to prevent an increase in non-fatal poisonings and poisoning deaths, in conjunction with saving Californians millions of dollars in unnecessary health care cost. Serving all Californians through a single, toll free number, 365 days a year, 24 hours a day, CPCS is the largest single provider of poison control services in the United States. CPCS leads the state as the primary resource for poison education, prevention, and treatment for the general public and health care professionals (www.calpoison.org). CPCS operates four call center divisions throughout California in Sacramento, Fresno/Madera, San Francisco and San Diego. The Poison Hotline provides service to the general public and health care professionals on poisoning exposures, handling approximately 700 calls daily. It provides additional special services and has a health education program. CPCS supports teaching and research, in collaboration with the University of California and partners. CPCS is located in the Department of Clinical Pharmacy in the UCSF School of Pharmacy, which is a world-renowned school that has led in NIH funding among pharmacy schools for 43 years.
